Programme Note
Sea Garden was performed as part of Spirit of Cornwall, the multi-sensory show garden which was awarded a silver-gilt medal at the Chelsea Flower Show 2018. The garden’s design was inspired by Geyer’s composition The Bronze Garden which was in turn, inspired by Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture garden in St. Ives, Cornwall. For the opening of the show garden, Geyer was commissioned to create a reimagining of The Bronze Garden to incorporate a mezzo-soprano and dancer. The performance was televised by the BBC, and an audio recording of the work was also broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
The text, and indeed the music, both created by Geyer, describe the sanctuary-like environment of Hepworth’s sculpture garden in the Cornish seaside town of St. Ives. Surrounded by high walls, the sub-tropical garden houses numerous weathered bronze sculptures that feel very much at home amongst the greenery.
