Preface

Before the fern, there is the earth.
With rays of warm sun, a green arm reaches.
A stalk stands alone, curled as the cold still bites.
Leaf, bound like a violin’s scroll continues its journey to the sky.
With a last effort the fiddlehead unfurls its lifeline – a single leaf,
to soak in the golden light until days shorten, and green slowly falls.
After the fern, there is the earth.
