Programme Note

To celebrate the Pico Players 10th Anniversary, they proposed that I write a new composition to preface Holst's The Planets. So, immediately I thought - What comes before the planets? Naturally, the big bang - the birth of the universe. The composition could certainly be described as a big bang. It opens with what I propose as "the chord of the universe", containing every single note. The chord is then developed into the first phrase, and the second phrase is an extended development on the first. The third phrase is then an extended variation of the second, and so it continues; thus spiralling out as each cyclic variation becomes larger, fizzing with explosive energy.
