Spirit of Cornwall
Inspired by the work of Barbara Hepworth, sculptor, the VTB Capital Garden which has been selected for the 2018 Chelsea Flower Show is designed by Stuart Charles Towner, award winning garden designer, drawing on the Cornish landscape that inspired Barbara Hepworth’s work. The garden won a Silver-Gilt medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018.
Prior to this success, Stuart won the Best in Show Award and Gold Medal at the RHS show at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in July 2015 for his previous garden, Green Seam.
Embracing garden design, music, sculpture and architecture, a central feature of the garden will be performances of a composition inspired by Barbara Hepworth’s work first performed in the presence of the Hepworth family in June 2015 to open a new Hepworth exhibition.
The Tate St Ives commissioned a second composition, performed on the 40th anniversary of Barbara Hepworth’s own garden at Tate St. Ives in April 2016 in the presence of Dr. Sophie Bowness (Barbara’s granddaughter and Trustee of the Hepworth Estate).
Six musicians and a dancer from Constella Opera Ballet gave three performances of the piece at the Chelsea Flower show, conducted by Leo Geyer, with choreograpy by Sarah Louise Kristiansen.
